Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK)

Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) is the major international airport that serves Beijing, the capital city of People's Republic of China. The IATA airport code is PEK, showing the Beijing's former romanization Peking. The airport is located around 20 kilometers northeast of Beijing city center. Although many consider it to be situated in Shunyi district, in reality it is an exclave of Chayang district, Beijing. Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) is the main hub of Air China, Hainan Airlines and China Southern Airlines. The airport expansion is largely funded by a loan of 500-million-euro from European Investment Bank (EIB).

Today, Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) is the busiest airport in People's Republic of China. In 2004, it became the busiest airport of Asia by aircraft movement overtaking Tokyo International Airport. Beijing is the second busiest airport in Asia and ninth busiest worldwide. In 2006, it served 48,501,102 passengers and 1,028,908 metric tonnes of cargo and had 376,340 aircrafts. Beijing Capital International Airport has two terminals. Terminal 1 was first opened in January 1980 and is green in color. After the opening of Terminal 2 in 1999 Terminal 1 was closed and went through a phase of renovation. Terminal 1 was reopened in September 2004 replacing the original 1980s terminal building.

Terminal 2 was opened in November 1999 after a month following the 50th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. A passengers' changing room is located on the first floor of the terminal building. The business center of Beijing Capital International Airport offers facsimile facilities, photo-copying, printing, mobile phone recharging, online connection via PC as well as for personal laptops. There is also a separate smoking room, public phones, water fountain and clinic. To know about hotels near Beijing Capital International Airport click on the following links:
