Presently the air traffic of Shanghai is served by the Shanghai Pudong International Airport. Before its construction in 1999, the Shanghai Hongqiao Airport was the chief airport of Shanghai. It was considered as one of the busiest airports in the People’s Republic of China. This airport lies on the western hemisphere of Shanghai; 13 kms away from the downtown area. This international airport of Shanghai is the oldest, aging approximately 80 years.
There are two terminals, named as A and B and cover an area of 82,000 square meters. The state-of –the-art facilities of the Shanghai Hongqiao Airport comprises 15 baggage transfer belts, 15 waiting rooms, 18 VIP lounges, first-class communication system and other services. Apart from the chief facilities, this airport, Shanghai Hongqiao Airport also catered other facilities like clinic, business centre, restaurants, shopping area, car parking area, lockers for passengers, lounge and separate smoking room.
The regular movement of the air traffic and airlines, after 1999, has come to a stand still in this Shanghai Hongqiao Airport. However, flights from the Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport will soon commence flying to the Haneda Airport of Tokyo and Gimpo International Airport of Gimpo. Numerous international and national flights landed and departed from this international airport of Shanghai. China southern Airlines, Air china, Shanghai Airlines, Hainan Airlines, Spring Airlines, Xiamen Airlines and Shandong Airlines is some of them.
